A Year to Volunteer

June 30, 2015

In early 2014, Philip Catalanotto had just earned a Bachelor’s degree from St. Thomas Aquinas in New York and was contemplating his next career move.  He knew he wanted to make an impact on children and young adults through volunteering or the ministry. After applying for a one-year volunteer experience with Dominican Volunteers USA, he was matched with Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly, Chicago, and his whole perspective changed. “I worked with other populations before, but they were kids and my peers. At first, Little Brothers was stressful and daunting. But then I got to know my elders and realized I could do it. It was totally different than what I thought it would be”

As a Volunteer Program Assistant for Little Brothers, Philip spends 3-4 days each week “in the field” visiting elders who live on Chicago’s South Side. They often go on outings to their favorite restaurants or stay in-home and chat. His interest in the ministry has helped him to create a special bond with his elders, many of whom are religious. “We have incredible conversations about God and how he’s worked in our lives.”

After a year spent discerning a vocation, Philip decided to enter the ministry and join the Dominican Friars, Denver. “Although my placement with Little Brothers ends in July, I hope to keep in touch.”

Little Brothers is a volunteer placement site for organizations such as Dominican Volunteers, USA. We are fortunate to provide year-long life changing volunteer experiences for up to 10 adults from around the world.
