Extreme heat or cold often has an even greater effect on seniors and those with chronic medical conditions. In addition to temperature, air quality also poses a threat to seniors (especially those with respiratory conditions). Please remember, if someone needs assistance or transportation to a heating/cooling center in Chicago, they should call 311. If they feel weak, dizzy, or have other medical symptoms, they should contact 911 immediately.
For extreme heat: air conditioning is the number one way to prevent heat illnesses and improve air quality, yet many seniors do not have it or do not realize the importance of turning it on in extreme heat conditions or fear the cost. Two hours in air conditioning can make all the difference by bringing down the core body tempurature. It is vital to check up on seniors continuously during heat waves to make sure that they turn their air on, have a fan, have enough water and sufficient food and medicine on hand. Little Brothers does regular checks on our extremely isolated & at risk seniors - be sure to check on your senior friends, family, and neighbors.
