Year-Round Celebrations
Our year-round Celebrations of Life are festive gatherings where elders have a chance to visit with others and enjoy good food. We escort our Old Friends from their homes to these special events, or go into their home with a celebration designed just for them.

Old Friends make new friends at our luncheons.
- We host Wednesday Luncheons with a theme for the menu, fun activities, and live entertainment.
- We bring In-Home Celebrations to those elders who cannot come to luncheons, offering something good to eat, as well as a gift to brighten their day, such as a book, a CD or magazines.
- Our Saturday Family Reunions offer elders the opportunity to reinforce friendships with contemporaries from their neighborhood as well as volunteers and staff they have met at other LBFE events.
- One Saturday each month, we hold Birthday Parties in our dining room for elders who have a birthday that month, complete with cake, cards, a gift, and the traditional birthday serenade.
- During our In-Home Birthday Visits volunteers bring a personalized gift, a decorated birthday cake, and other goodies to our Old Friends to celebrate their special day.
- Throughout the year, we escort elders on special group Outings to go to the movies, visit a museum, see a play, or simply walk in the park.

LBFE intern and Program Assistant Brenda Weigand was moved to write an article for the Dominican Volunteers USA Newsletter about her experience with us.
“I wanted something different before graduate school. I wanted a challenge. I wanted to expand my comfort zone. I wanted to see what life was like from another perspective, and I hoped to learn something along the way. I’ve certainly gotten more than I bargained for …”
