Special Programs

Through a variety of effective programs, we support those who wish to remain independent and in their own homes as long as possible and support those who wish to “age in place,” in the environment where they feel most at home. We also offer them special programs to keep them connected and demonstrate that others care about their well-being.

Our staff is trained to lend a hand to elders who struggle with the complex challenges and changes that affect our friends.

  • Our monthly Food Bag Delivery Program provides elders who are most in need of supplemental nutritious food from our award-winning Food Pantry.
  • Our licensed Social Worker provides information and support to the staff and volunteers.  When necessary, an assessment of the elder provides professional guidance with difficult decisions.
  • Unusually hot or bitter cold days trigger Weather Emergency services that make sure our Old Friends are comfortable and safe. When necessary, we install donated air conditioners or fans in the homes of those in need.
  • We also provide Direct Services such as running errands, providing transportation to appointments, and helping our elders with small household tasks, including teaching them to operate a new appliance.
  • Our Social Clubs such as the Book Club and Art Club are monthly interactive cultural gatherings that engage both elders and volunteers  who enjoy similar interests.

I volunteered to give something to a group which is often overlooked.

“LBFE has a warm, friendly atmosphere, the site is a very cool loft building with a garden patio, parking.  The staff and volunteers are very committed to Little Bros.  They’re also fun and diverse. The elderly can be challenging at times but all in all are so pleasant, fun and INTERESTING.”

Robin Dannevik, Full-Time Student/Personal Assistant

“I volunteered to give something to a group which is often overlooked and shunned by our youth-crazed society. Volunteering with LBFE has given me something that speaks to my heart and brings me a better sense of community in my life…something that battles the alienation that this city seems so good at proliferating.”

Tim Widlic, Emergency Medical Technician

“The Chicago Chapter of LBFE is as well organized and it is well known.  The elders are very happy about it and I am glad for the organizational skills. Personally volunteering with LBFE is helping me to grow and to sharpen my skills in Ministry.”
